Misplaced fishing licence

Hello. Just had a frustrating thing happen to me. I put my wife’s and my fishing licences together every year. They are purchased at same time, have sequential registration numbers and all. We were being checked the other day and mine was not there. Misplaced or lost. Whatever. My fault for not checking. I received a ticket for fishing without a licence, and my question would be. Should it not have been a ticket for not being able to produce it? When we purchased a licence there is an original book with the carbon copy’s in it. Would a copy of that help?

Thanks for your input.

Nope, you must have told the officer you didn't know where it was (misplaced or lost), not that you left it somewhere else (knew where it actually was) and could produce it at a later date. The department is not obligated nor will they do a search to verify if you actually purchased one.....the onus is on you to produce the original. They insist on the original as there are situations (caught and retained fish of a certain size) where you must sign and date the back of the licence. It's also illegal to have two licences for the same reason. The fine is correct.

Hopeful one day Manitoba can get into the 21st century and go digital.
Until then you are on the hook

1. Look for the licences if you can't find it.
2. Contact the COs with the numbers you have knowing your wife's number.
you have to do this any way to get a new licences.
3. If you find the licences or have proof go to court. Plead not guilty. To never having a licences.
4. As long as you had proof you had one it shows you are not guilty of the ticket. You were not charged with anything else.

5 Think of the time off work and if the ticket is worth it to fight.
A lot of the time it's not between stress and loss of pay or holiday time.
You may consider it a hard lesson.

Just my two cents good luck .

Not accepted, has to be the original. Even if your charged with "failure to carry", you still have to provide the original. If your charged with "fishing without" it's a done deal...... unless you plead not guilty (because you actually found your original) go to court and then the fine gets reduced to "failure to carry", the difference in the fine is $124.....need to ask yourself if it's all worth it?????

Just wait till we get E licenses and we lose our phone in the hole or over the side of the boat. Sure as [emoji90]I would get checked if that happened to me. I still like the Ontario way with the outdoors card. For me I renew every three years. No worries of getting that card wet. It’s always in my tackle box.

As with all tickets you could check your waiting time and then go to a law court and ask to be seen by a magistrate. You would have to produce the carbon copy if you can get one. You would plead guilty with an explanation.
This would not get you off the hook for not having your license with you, but the magistrate may give you a reduced fine,,, depending on your history with the legal system, and how you present yourself and whatever explanation provided. This is done via video court or over the phone.
Also depends how mush time you have to spare as courts are Mon.- Fri.

I take it then they would have to have satellite enabled wifi. I know the Whiteshell, LW and LM would be covered with normal service. Up north where I go a lot, forget about normal service. There is none! Not sure of coverage on Whitemouth Lake, not that I ever go there.

I'm not sure what the rules in ON are, but here is the message I received when purchasing the license:

"Thank you for your recent activity on Ontario’s Fish and Wildlife Licencing Service.
For your convenience attached is your licence summary and receipt (if you made a purchase). The licence summary can be printed anytime or can be saved for use on your mobile device. If you have any questions, contact the Natural Resources Information and Support Centre at 1-800-387-7011."

I think you still have to produce it as a printed copy or on your phone. The gas station in ON printed it out for me and said that I needed to keep a copy with me.

Ontario has what they call an outdoors card. Card is good for three years. You can buy a one year fishing license but you then have to renew license every year. You can renew online and print off license and carry with your card. I buy a card and three year fishing license so I know when my card expires, so does my license. And Ontario is by calendar year.

I also think it all depends on what conservation officer stops to check on you and how you respond to them questioning you. Have been stopped and had to show my licence six times last year and all in different locations of the province. Twice I showed them the paper copy and the other four times showed the copy that was on my phone and had no issues doing so.
