I'd like to know the HARD facts about these rigs. Its easy to say they are dangerous or hurt fish but harder to show real proof. The hooks are crap and break very easy. A broken hook in the mouth of a fish is no big deal. If you make your own rigs in some what the same configuration as the dreaded pickerel rig how is this any different?

The worst part about them is they get used where there are lots of snags and get snaged the rod gets set down waiting for a fish to bite the bait angler notices he has a hit grabs the rod only to realize the rig is stuck on the bottem and the fish stuck with it. They get break the line and the fish is stuck to starve on the bottem.

I can get snagged with just a weight. 1 hook 2 hooks doesn't make it snag any worse. Unless someone is scuba diving how would we know the fish is hooked and snagged? Sounds like people don't like something for their own reasons then make up reasons why they shouldn't be used. I could make a good sounding reason why ANY piece of fishing gear shouldn't be used under these rules. The reason this bothered me is not what its about. Its the way some of the members here think they can chastise a person or rig because of what they believe WITHOUT including any support for the comment.

I pull many pickerel rig hooks out of a dozen or more catfish each year. seems that weekly I am performing surgery on these things. same goes for heavy catrigs tied up to light main lines. 25 lb test rigs tied to 10 lbs test mono ??? lol

So what now? Do we want to outlaw light line? Hooks from these rigs will rot away just as if it was one of the better hooks some here seem to use. Hell I don't even use these but this holier then now attitude drives me nuts.

I can agree these rigs are built like crap. If I need something like that I make my own with heavier everythiing. Maybe the reason you have brought some in with dead fish on is because of the cheap line a lot of people use. I still believe saying the concept and use of these rigs for larger fish has no credence. I was at the river this past weekend with my son. I got tired of rerigging my son's line and had a home made stout rig like the P-rig on a spare rod. Ready made I rigged it up to his rod and he caught 2 small cats at once by passing his old mans fish count. That's always a blast getting two at once. So now explained I do agree with some of the responses that clear up why some feel that way but on some I still disagree. I love being on this forum, (maybe too much according to my wife) and respect every ones opinion even if I don't always agree.

Wowzers! Such controversy I've stirred up! I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea about me, I should clarify. I love our fishery, the P-rigs I use are technically called Pike Rigs, heavier duty made out of wire, not mono, with stronger hooks. And I never, ever use at Lockport (snagport). And I only catch sturgeon with them at Nutimik, right off the campground where there is a mud bottom and very little snags.

Unrelated, I also keep as part of my fishing gear a roll of garbage bags and pick up trash in the area I'm fishing when things are slow. I'm a good guy! Really! Every fish I catch goes back in the water because I don't like to kill things, I just love fishing!
