If you are prepared for at least a kilometer walk or more there are guys that are fishing within that distance and are catching but more smaller stuff and variety.
I am usually at least two or three miles into the middle of the lake in 16 or more feet of water and usually on the move. If you go to the other side of the lake (Balsam Bay) you can be in deeper water a little sooner, you can set yourself up in line with some of the perm's that are there. There are a lot of spots that are easily accessible along the Red River. Lockport if you are after Saugers, CIL Plant before Selkirk, Selkirk Park in front of the boat launch. Sugar Island there are always tents set up so you will know where to set up or fish about a kilometer north of the island on the west side about 75 to 100 feet from the shoreline. That will put you in the 15 to 20 fee of water where I have had success. You can line yourself up with the little old church that is situated on the west side of main.
Good luck,

Hello there,
I'm Kevin and I just moved to Winnipeg this summer. I see you are familiar with Chalet beach?? I am curious if I should even bother trying for some big Lake Winnipeg eyes if I haven't even got means to get out far from shore? Is it within walking distance to get to where the action is? Any information would help! Thanks for your time, Kevin
