Default Anyone seen lampreys?

I caught a carp of about 5lbs with a lamprey attached to it adjacent to a pectoral fin. This was last week on the Assiniboine in Brandon. I am wondering how common they are.

I've seen them on pike and sturgeon before on the Winnipeg River.

Very common and quite delicious, they are boneless and taste like Squid.

In the fall lots of supermarkets in France have aquariums full of live lampreys - they are obviously a delicacy. Mind you, they are all 18”plus so a bit more than a mouthful!

I've caught a few and all fell off when out of water. Everyone I'm fishing with freaks like it's a snake but I grab it and put it back in the water as it's in it's last year of life. There like a wood tick but for fish.

I suggest people not to purposely kill lamprey as they do not cause permanent harm to fish (like sea lamprey). We have three lamprey species in Manitoba, Only Silver and Chestnut parasitize fish - and only in their short breeding cycle. Chestnut Lamprey are fairly rare, so it would be really unfortunate if they were killed.

Wow - great photo!
I have never seen a lamprey attach to a Common Carp - and strange to see it attach near the dorsal fin!

To MB flyguy. I notice you caught that carp on a boilie. Do you feed a lot to get them used to boilies?
